HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order, you get to choose what you’d like at checkout.

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

When we get to Chicago Arnie’s Choice we often stop and admire how great it looks. Definitely a WOW. Lots of flower per plant and the plants themselves are strong but the plants don’t ‘need dividing’ very often (in MA). I have it next to Buttered Popcorn and Red Volunteer that are about the same size and bloom time.

  2. It is such a bright long lasting color

This one started off fast from first planting season with loads of beautiful purple flowers. They stand out amongst the rudbeckia.

  3. Wales, MI

Aug. 7, 2014 Wales, MI I received this as a bonus plant 3 years ago and it has become one of my favorites. Mine is a medium dusty rose color (which I love), but it’s the bloom count that is over the top. 300 this year and counting! The only downside is the blooms tend to bleach out and get white streaks, but I prefer to keep it in the sun and not sacrifice the number of blooms : ) Foliage isn’t quite as neat as some others, but it is a huge plant. Definitely want more of this one! I would rate it 15 for bloom count, but give it a nine because of the fading.

  4. Tinley Park, IL

This plant is in its 3rd year in my landscape and it is HUGE. Hundreds (ok, I didn’t count, but it seemed like a ton) of blooms and the most beautiful soft violet color. Started early June and is still going strong mid-July in my area. One of my favorites.

This is the first year for Chicago Arnie’s Choice in our zone 6.5 garden and while we have not had a lot of scapes or blooms, the ones we have had are georgeous. Next year should be a spectacle.

Big and glorious! Lots of blooms, but I noticed, however, that they were a little wilty in my hot and humid climate.

  8. Suwanee, GA

First year growing Arnie’s Choice. Only one fan produced a scape which carried four blooms. (Next year should be great!). The picture here looks great but I think I like my blooms better.. 😉 Understanding that all plants vary slightly, my plants produced blooms of extremely bright magenta with a soft yellow/green throat that fades into the petal as white. I’ve never seen a bloom like it. Perfect crisp colors! Highly recommended…

  9. McLouth, KS

This richly colored daylilly has performed exceedingly well for us during the last three years. Each growing season has been different-one really wet, another extremely hot and dry with this year being about perfect-and Chicago Arnie’s Choice has survived all with grace. I have several clumps next to a pale pink daylilly and a bright pink monarda and the combination is stunning. Much recommended for the midwest!
