HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order, you get to choose what you’d like at checkout.

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

  1. Beyond My Expectations

C Jeffrey Mc Lean (verified owner)

I received several large clusters of El Desperado, and they bloomed a bit earlier than I anticipated. Their color was remarkably bright, and the contrast of purple and yellow was beyond my expectations. I planted them in two very different locations, and both plantings did very well. I just came onto the site to purchase more of this remarkable daylily. It was a real winner in my Zone 7a garden—with morning light in one spot and with afternoon light in another.

    Strong Bloomer

    Pixie Senesac

El Desperado is one of the most eye-catching daylilies in my garden. Once it starts blooming, it is covered in flowers for about 3 weeks, then slows down, but here in upstate NY (zone 5) it was still blooming in mid-August. I will be planting more.

What is your hardiness zone? Zone 7

Fourth of July weekend, and this first-year beauty just bloomed. It is stunning! The blooms are huge, with near-purple eyezones and a thin ribbon of purple ruffle around the age. Just gorgeous. I can’t believe how many blooms it already has. Can’t wait until it is a little more established and has as many blooms as other reviewers are mentioning! Well worth the price.

Stunning blooms! Strong and sturdy, and very, very prolific. I have it paired with Yellow Bouquet, a lovely double yellow, with a purple lorapetalum shrub behind them. The combination is beautiful. You will be very happy with El Desperado. The picture can’t do it justice.

Absolutely gorgeous! I can’t believe how many blooms I have on this daylily in it’s first year. The flowers are larger than I thought and quite spectacular. I’m so glad that I bought El Desperado. Definitely worth having!

We can’t wait for El Desperado to bloom each year! Truly spectacular blooms. Without planning, El Desperado ended up, in our bed, planted next to Grape Velvet, which blooms in our zone about the same time. Everyone exclaims about the combination and gives us credit for something we did not plan. This is a must have daylily!
