HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order and are the same huge, healthy plants we sell. Just leave the decision up to us and we’ll pick something you’re sure to love!

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

Wayside King Royals is a rich deep purple with perfect contrasting yellow throat daylily. Very strong grower, looks great with Orange Vols, or any Orange or yellow/gold daylily. A terrific addition to my collection.

I planted 3 of these in a spot that gets lots of sun. I wish I would have
Heeded the review iof the customer in 8b. There was not one single flower on any of them. Very disappointed. Don’t plant in zone 8

  5. Love it!

A newbie mistake and I bought this dormant for my Houston Texas garden. It did not disappoint. It is not as tall as maybe in a cooler climate but the blooms are fantastic and do not fade in the Houston heat. The foliage is very pretty too.

    Judith Teske (verified owner)

I love the graceful, well-branched look of these flowers. The colors are gorgeous– deep with enough oomph to grab you and no fading even in full sun. And to top it off a very sturdy plant. Wish I would have discovered this many years ago.

  9. Not a good choice for the Deep South

    Nan LoBue (verified owner)

This one has not thrived for me in zone 8b. It may be one of those dormants that just needs a colder climate. After two seasons, it has not increased or bloomed, and the foliage is very undersized. I’m going to have to find this one a new home.

I got Wayside King Royale last year and it bloomed beautifully this summer. I can hardly wait until we troop the color next summer. I cannot imagine what took me so long to get this beauty.

    Franklin, TN (verified owner)

One of my favorite plants. I received as a bonus, and it has been terrific. Beautiful color and a lot of blooms. In TN it needs partial shade like all the darker colors to keep its spectacular purple. Very lovely day lily.

Great color, but very slow grower in my CO garden

    diane richmond (verified owner)

I actually have only one of these, so maybe it just doesn’t like the spot, though it has better soil than most of my garden. After 3-4 years, still undersized. Blooms, but not as prolifically as others I have purchased from Oakes. 4 stars for the great purple, though!

What is your hardiness zone? Zone 6

This one is a perfect deep purple, holding its color better than any other purple I have. There are lots of blooms on multi-branched scapes. Very tall, and multiplies rapidly. Looks great with Beautiful Edgings and Prairie Moonlight.

Of all my many daylilies, this purple beauty has the most blooms by far. I wish I had counted the
scapes last year, I believe it would have been close to 100. I think it is a must, goes wonderful paired with pinks, yellows or reds. A SUPER SPECIAL OAKES DAYLILY. Looking forward to its
beauty this Spring and Summer. Love my Wayside King Royale!

Starkville, MS This is my first time to order from Oakes and I could not be more happy with the price I paid, the fast and friendly service, and most of all the plants. I planted them the day after I received them at the end of May and I have already had tons of flowers from these plants. It amazed me that they produced shoots and buds within about 5 days. I am ordering more!

This gorgeous beauty was one of my first to bloom and is still blooming 2-3 flowers daily. It is as vibrant and sturdy as any of my daylilies. The color stays bold even during the hot midday sun.

First year to bloom and it had many flowers and all were picture worthy. Mine tends toward a royal purple. Very velvet and contrasts nicely with other colors. Didn’t loose it’s color or surface in sun or rain.

Zone 4a. This daylily is not purple as described by Oakes but a deep burgundy wine. If you’re expecting the color of Wayside King Royale to be like the purple of Supertunia Royal Velvet, you will be disappointed. I planted WKR last fall. Oakes’ shipment was most generous and I ended up dividing it into five fat fans. The first bloom arrived on June 20, followed by 50 more over the next 19 days. It’s in a west exposure where it gets all-afternoon sun, but it doesn’t fade.

My Wayside King Royale isn’t in bloom yet (first year since I planted it last summer) but if the number of buds and branching) on 4 scapes is anything to go by, it has to be an outstanding plant. I can hardly wait for the first bloom to open. I’m giving it a 10 based on form, not having seen the blooms… It’s certainly coming along like any good daylily should.

Absolutely gorgeous! Purchased this one when my husband indicated that he would like to see a purple daylily in our garden. I planted it in late spring 2009 so didn’t get a bloom, but it has grown to quite a large clumb, and now this season it has MORE than pleased us. Covered in blooms, covered in buds promising more blooms. The color is like velvet, so rich and luxurious. My husband loves it and now wants me to get more purples. But it would be hard to beat this beauty.

While maybe not a show stopper for me, Wayside King Royale is still a quality good looking purple. It blows away Super Purple and Vino De Notte which I planted from another grower. Next year it will be side by side with Chicago Sunrise.

I get a lot of comments from this one. I grow it next to my deck stairs in full sun along with white yarrow, which makes it really stand out. It is a very rich purple on tall, strong scapes. You won’t be disappointed with this one.
